In the Balama concession, DDI has been producing different types of vegetables (Cabbage, Tomato, Onion, Lettuce, Cabbage, Pepper and others) in an area of around 10 hectares irrigated by 3 different irrigation systems: sprinklers, drip and gravity. Although mainly meant at training the local staff and securing commercial relationships, DDI has been producing around 100 tons of vegetables per year since 2019.
Grains and beans such as maize, sesame and soya are also produced in the Balama concession on a yearly basis mostly to train DDI’s team or as a first crop to nurture the soils.
DDI has approximately 75ha of permanent plantations in Balama, Montepuez and Chiure, with over 8000 cashew trees planted until 2020 and a few dozen avocado and lemon trees planted as trials. Cashew nuts are normally sold to trading companies that export to Europe and Asia.
