Irrigation Potential

  • DDI has secured water rights for 16 million cubic meters of water/year from the Chipembe dam and the Montepuez river system. This quantity of water is deemed sufficient to irrigate +/- 2500 hectares of land year round (supplementary irrigation during the rainy season).

This would permit the production under controlled conditions of both a summer crop and winter crop thus resulting in the ability to irrigate +/- 5,000 hectares of crops p.a.

After a site visit, one of the irrigation equipment suppliers made the following comments:
“rarely have I seen a site that would appear so well suited for a project of this nature. Most sites have water but to have a large, ready built dam and usable water rights is unusual to say the least and the gentle rising slope is suitable for pivot irrigation and will also allow for good drainage.”
